Wilmington Chimney InspectionsThere are three levels of inspections a chimney sweep may conduct to verify the integrity and safety of your chimney.
A Level 1 inspection is the simplest and most basic of the three types of inspections. If you have not modified your chimney structure or method of using it, this is the only type of inspection you should need. It assumes that your chimney has been receiving regular service and is being used in the same ways it was during the last inspection. During a Level 1 inspection, your chimney sweeper will analyze both chimney interior and exterior parts. Some segments of this check will require using basic tools to remove panels or coverings, but will not affect the chimney or building structure. During this inspection, the technician will be looking for integrity throughout the chimney structure and flue. He or she will also ensure that the chimney is not obstructed by any debris, and check the levels of combustible deposits buildup. Level 2 inspections are necessary if any modifications have been made to your chimney. These include changing the fuel type, relining the flue, or replacing/adding an appliance that is part of the chimney process. An important thing to note is that this level of inspection is required when selling or transferring a property or after an event that has caused damage (examples of events include fires or extreme weather like hurricanes/tornadoes). As with a Level 1 inspection, no specialty tools should be necessary for the examination. However, it may include a video inspection using video scanning, with the intent of searching for cracks or issues within the internal surfaces and joints of the flue/flue liner. In addition, a Level 2 search could include accessing attics, crawl spaces, and basements, and cleaning combustibles from these locations. Level 3 inspections are the most meticulous, and are usually only performed if an earlier inspection suggests there may be issues with the construction of the chimney or interior portions of it. In order to properly assess hidden parts of the chimney, deconstruction or removal of certain portions of the chimney may be necessary. This will allow our technicians to view areas that are being checked as part of the Level 3 inspection. |
