A chimney is an excellent asset to have during the winter months- when everything is cold and snowy outdoors, there's nothing like throwing some logs into your fireplace and cozying up next to it. However, while you're using your fireplace, soot and creosote (a type of highly flammable chemical produced by burning wood) are building up within your chimney. Depending on the type of wood you use for your fireplace, creosote may build up more or less quickly (for this reason, pine wood should be avoided, as it produces creosote at a higher rate). In addition, following poor burning practices or using an inefficient/damaged stove can assist in creosote buildup. Even a small amount of creosote can create the potential for a fire to begin in your chimney, so removing it on at least an annual basis is a good idea. Meanwhile, soot, as it builds up, can cause damage to your chimney. Cleaning it off of your chimney walls early and often will prevent it from causing any problems. Buildups of both soot and creosote can also cause the chimney to perform poorly and decrease the flow of air and smoke up and out of the chimney. Chimney maintenance probably is not something that crosses your mind very often, but it is an important factor in ensuring your home is safe and secure. Chimney Inspections
To see what kind of shape your chimney is in, you can have your chimney inspected. There are three different levels of inspection that can be performed-- each incremental level includes additional checks. Higher level inspections are only necessary if you have made changes to your chimney or fireplace, or if you are unsure about the state of your chimney and have not had it inspected before. The lowest level inspection is by far the most common, and is typically done in tandem with a chimney cleaning on an annual basis. Chimney Cleaning
According to the National Fire Protection Association, you should have your chimney inspected at least once a year, and cleaned if the inspection reveals it to be necessary. Additionally, the Chimney Safety Institute of America recommends your chimney be swept if one-eight of an inch of soot has built up. Even if you do not use your chimney regularly, it is a good idea to have it checked. Debris may begin clogging it up, small animals and birds can form nests in the chimney, or it may be deteriorating and require repair. One of the most important parts of your chimney is the liner. This is the "padding" on the walls of the passageway in the center of your chimney. There are a few reasons why this passageway must be protected from the smoke and other products that rise up out of your fireplace and into the atmosphere. The liner prevents heat from moving through the chimney too rapidly, which can start fires in any woodwork that is nearby.
